What Indian Building Code Actually Specifies
India's structural loading standard is IS 875 (Part 2): 1987, reaffirmed 2008, "Code of Practice for Design Loads (Other Than Earthquake) for Buildings and Structures, Part 2: Imposed Loads," published by the Bureau of Indian Standards. It sets two kinds of minimum design loads that are relevant here, and they are not the same measurement.
Floor load on the balcony slab itself (Table 1, clause 3.1): for balconies in dwelling houses, the code specifies a minimum of 3.0 kN per square metre spread across the floor, plus a concentrated load of 1.5 kN per metre run applied at the outer edge specifically. Balconies attached to other kinds of buildings (hotels, offices, schools, and similar) carry a higher minimum, matching whatever the room they open off is rated for, with a floor of 4.0 kN/m², and the same 1.5 kN/m outer-edge concentrated load.
Horizontal load on the railing or parapet itself (Table 3, clause 5.1): this is a sideways push, applied at handrail or coping height, and it is graded by how the space is used. Private balconies and parapet walls that are part of a dwelling are rated for 0.35 kN per metre run. Other balconies, stairways, and roof parapets not covered by that category are rated higher, at 0.75 kN/m. Parapets in assembly buildings, theatres, schools, anywhere a crowd could lean on a rail at once, are rated highest, at 2.25 kN/m, because the code is pricing in the risk of a crowd pushing at once, not one person's houseplants.
What This Number Does Not Tell You
Here is the honest limit, and it is the entire reason I am writing this guide instead of a chart. IS 875 tells you what a railing must be designed to resist as a minimum, before it is ever built. It does not tell you what a specific, already-installed, already-aged railing outside a specific window can additionally carry once you clip, hang, or wall-mount a planter onto it.
Those are different questions. A design minimum assumes new materials, correct anchoring, and no prior damage. Your actual railing might be mild steel that has been rusting quietly at the weld points for fifteen years. It might have been re-welded once already, badly, by whoever fixed a dent nobody told you about. It might be structurally fine and rated well above the code minimum. I cannot tell you which of these is true of your railing, and neither can a builder's code, because IS 875 was never written to answer that question in the first place. A horizontal-push rating in kN per metre also isn't the same thing as a hanging point-load rating in kilograms, and converting between the two honestly requires knowing the railing's actual condition, not just the code's design floor. I looked for a universal "safe kg to hang from a railing" figure to give you here, and it does not exist in this standard or anywhere else I could verify. I am not going to invent one.
What I Actually Do Instead
Since I cannot give you a number for your railing, here is what I actually check and do on mine, in order:
- I look at the railing itself before I trust it with anything heavier than it's already carrying. Rust at the joints, movement when I push it firmly sideways, or a weld that looks like a repair job are all reasons to stop and ask someone qualified, not reasons to hang a planter anyway and see.
- I keep anything genuinely heavy off the railing and on the floor instead, resting against the wall rather than clipped to the rail. A floor-standing pot only has to survive the floor's load rating, which the code sets generously (3.0 kN/m² minimum for a dwelling balcony), and it isn't relying on a bracket, a weld, or my own guess about the railing's condition.
- For anything I do put on the railing (a lightweight window box, a single small terracotta pot in a clip-on holder), I keep the total weight modest and check the mounting hardware itself, not the railing's theoretical rating, since a cheap clip failing is a far more common cause of a dropped pot than the railing itself giving way.
- Before hanging or wall-mounting anything I am genuinely unsure about, I ask. That means the building's RWA (resident welfare association) if the railing is shared building infrastructure, or a structural engineer directly if it's a real question about load-bearing capacity. Neither of those is an overreaction. A planter falling three floors onto a footpath is a real, documented failure mode in Indian apartment buildings, and it is the one outcome this whole guide exists to help you avoid.
Wind Load Makes This Worse, Not Better
A loaded railing planter is not just a static weight question. Pre-monsoon winds add a horizontal force on top of whatever is already hanging there, and a pot that sits perfectly still in April can rock hard enough to work a clip loose in a June storm.
