DIY Wicking Self-Watering Pots for a Balcony (India)
A wicking pot is just a container with a water reservoir at the bottom and a cord or strip of fabric pulling moisture up into the soil, so a plant keeps drinking for days after you last watered it. I've built these from old buckets and two-litre bottles for the pots I can't get to every day. Here's exactly how, what goes wrong if you skip a step, and the mosquito risk you take on the moment you add standing water to a balcony.

What a Wicking Pot Actually Is
Take any container, put a layer of water at the very bottom that never touches the roots directly, and run a wick, a strip of old cotton cloth, a length of thick cord, or even a rolled-up piece of an old towel, from that water layer up into the soil above it. Capillary action pulls water up the wick the same way a paper towel soaks up a spill, and the soil around the wick stays lightly moist even when the surface has gone dry. That's the whole mechanism. No pump, no electricity, no timer.
I built my first one for the curry leaf plant on the end of my balcony that I'd forget for four or five days at a stretch during a busy week, and it hasn't wilted since, even in peak summer, as long as I refill the reservoir every week to ten days.
Labelling this clearly since I couldn't find university extension literature specifically on wicking-pot construction to cite here (I tried, and I'm saying so rather than making up a source): everything in this build section is my own repeated experience building and running these on my own balcony, not a cited fact.
What You Need (Budget Version)
- One container to plant in (an old bucket, a large nursery pot, even a big steel deghi works)
- One slightly wider or taller container, or a section of a second bucket, to act as the reservoir the first one sits inside or above
- A strip of old cotton t-shirt, an old dish towel, or thick cotton cord, cut about 30-40cm long
- A drill or a heated nail to make holes
You do not need to buy a wicking pot kit or a fancy self-watering planter from a nursery. A bucket that's already cracked at the handle and a strip cut off a t-shirt you were going to throw out does the same job.
How I Build One
- Drill or poke 3-4 small holes in the bottom of the pot you'll actually plant in, just enough for the wick material to pass through snugly, not so large that soil pours through freely.
- Push the wick through the holes so a good length hangs below into where the reservoir will be, and enough sits inside the pot spread out under the soil so it makes wide contact, not just a single point.
- Set the planting pot inside or above the reservoir container so the wick's hanging end sits in the water layer but the bottom of the planting pot itself doesn't sit directly in the water. This gap matters: roots that sit permanently in water rot, roots that only get wicked moisture don't.
- Fill the reservoir with water up to just below where the planting pot's base sits.
- Fill the planting pot with soil as normal, spreading the wick's upper end out under the soil before you add the rest.
- Plant, water once from the top to settle the soil around the wick and get it started, then let the reservoir do the ongoing work.
What Goes Wrong If You Skip a Step
Skip the gap between the reservoir water and the pot's base, and you've built a permanently waterlogged pot, not a wicking one, and root rot follows within a couple of weeks for anything except plants that genuinely like wet feet. I made exactly this mistake on my first attempt with a mint cutting, using a container where the inner pot's holes sat right in the standing water rather than above it, and lost the plant to rot inside ten days.
Skip drilling enough holes or use a wick too thin to make good contact with the soil, and the pull isn't strong enough. The topsoil looks dry and the plant wilts anyway because the moisture never makes it more than an inch or two up from the base.
Leave the reservoir open to mosquitoes and you've created exactly the kind of standing water that breeds them. This is not a minor caveat: any water sitting for more than a few days on a balcony in India is a mosquito risk, and a hidden reservoir you refill weekly is easier to forget about than an open saucer you see every time you water. I keep mine covered with a scrap of the same cloth used for the wick, tucked over the opening, and I check it on the same weekly cycle I use for the pot-saucer routine in my mosquito-breeding guide rather than treating it as a separate chore.
This next figure is also my own observation, not from a cited source, since I could not find the specific breeding-window numbers on the government pages I tried: in my own experience, standing water left completely undisturbed on my balcony starts showing visible mosquito larvae within about a week in the warmer months. I don't have a verified citation for that exact number, so treat it as my own rough rule of thumb, not an official figure, and err toward checking more often rather than less.
Who This Actually Helps
This is worth building if you travel for a few days at a stretch, if you have one or two pots on the far end of a long balcony that you genuinely forget, or if you're the kind of gardener whose watering schedule is inconsistent rather than daily. It is not worth building for every pot on a forty-pot balcony like mine; I use it on maybe four or five containers where missed watering has actually cost me a plant before, and hand-water the rest, because building and maintaining reservoirs on every single pot is more upkeep than it saves.
It also is not a substitute for good drainage. A wicking pot still needs a way for genuinely excess water to escape if you overfill the reservoir or get an unexpected downpour on an open balcony; I still drill standard drainage holes higher up the side of the planting pot as a safety overflow, above the wick's water line.
FAQ
Do I need to buy anything special to build one of these?
No. A cracked bucket, an old bottle, a strip cut from a t-shirt or towel headed for the rag pile, and a drill or heated nail cover it. I have never bought a purpose-made wicking pot or reservoir kit for my own balcony.
How often do I need to refill the reservoir?
In my own experience, once a week to once every ten days for a medium pot in Pune's summer heat, more often in peak summer, less in the cooler months. This varies by pot size and plant, so check the water level rather than going purely by the calendar the first few weeks.
Does the standing water in the reservoir attract mosquitoes?
Yes, and this is the real cost of this build, not a minor footnote. Any hidden or open standing water on a balcony is a mosquito breeding risk in India's climate. Can I use this for every pot on my balcony?
You can, but I don't. I reserve wicking builds for the handful of pots where missed watering has actually cost me a plant, and hand-water the rest, since maintaining reservoirs and wicks on forty pots is more work than it saves for pots I water daily anyway.
What plants work best in a wicking pot?
In my experience, leafy plants and herbs that like consistent moisture, curry leaf and mint among them, do well. I'd be cautious with anything that specifically wants to dry out fully between waterings, since a wicking pot is built to prevent exactly that drying-out cycle.
