Stopping Mosquito Breeding in Balcony Pot Saucers: The Routine That Actually Worked
Three years into keeping forty-odd pots on this balcony, I lifted a saucer under my curry leaf pot and found it wriggling. Mosquito larvae, in water I'd let sit for maybe four days while I was travelling. I'd spent years worrying about root rot and hard-water crust and never once thought about what was breeding right under the pots keeping those roots alive. That was the wake-up call. Here's the routine I've followed since.
Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that spreads dengue and chikungunya (both a real risk across urban India, not a rare edge case), doesn't need a pond. It breeds in small volumes of clean, still water, and in warm conditions it can go from egg to biting adult in roughly a week to ten days. A forgotten pot saucer, a plant tray, an upturned lid catching rain, all of these are exactly the kind of container it prefers over open, moving, or dirty water.
The Routine
Empty every saucer at least once a week, twice during monsoon. This is the single most effective thing I do, and it's free. A larva needs about a week to mature, so a weekly empty (I do it every Sunday, tied to a day I'm already watering) interrupts the cycle before anything can hatch into a biting adult.
Tip the water onto the balcony floor or into a plant that wants it, don't just top it up. Topping up a saucer that already has old water sitting in it doesn't clear out eggs already laid on the inner rim, just above the waterline, which is exactly where Aedes eggs are laid and where they can survive a partial dry-out.
Sand in the saucer, for pots I check less often. For a few plants on the far end of the balcony I don't reach every week, I've started filling the saucer with a shallow layer of sand instead of leaving it empty for standing water to collect in. The sand still catches drainage runoff and helps a plant that wants extra humidity nearby, but it doesn't hold a standing puddle the way an empty saucer does after a heavy watering or rain.
Check the rim, not just the water. Even an empty-looking saucer can have eggs stuck to the dry inner wall from before it dried out; a quick rinse and scrub with an old toothbrush when I do the weekly empty, not just a tip-and-refill, has been part of the routine since that first larvae scare.
Where This Overlaps With My Other Guides
Monsoon is where this risk peaks for me, the same season I've written about for drainage and root rot: more rain means more saucers filling up between checks, and a missed week during heavy monsoon rain is a longer window than a missed week in dry season. I've moved to twice-weekly saucer checks specifically through the monsoon months, on top of my regular drainage checks.
There's also a direct clash with a habit from my hard-water guide: letting a bucket or saucer of water sit out overnight to let chlorine off-gas is genuinely useful for a few chlorine-sensitive plants, but it's also exactly the kind of still, undisturbed water Aedes prefers. I now only do that overnight-sit step in a covered container, never in an open saucer, after connecting the two habits.
Saucer material matters too. A terracotta saucer wicks some moisture away and dries faster at the edges than a plastic one holding the same amount of water, which in my experience gives it a slightly shorter window of standing water after a heavy watering. It's a minor effect next to the actual routine, not a substitute for it.
What I Don't Bother With
I don't use chemical larvicide tablets in my saucers. With forty-plus pots, a weekly physical routine has been enough, and I'd rather not add another product to a balcony my kids sit on. I also don't bother with saucers under pots I've already stood on bricks for drainage (covered in my monsoon guide), since gravity mostly keeps meaningful water off the floor there in the first place; it's the flat-sitting pots with catch-trays that need the routine most.

It can be, if it's in an open container. I still do this for a few chlorine-sensitive plants, but only in something covered now, since open standing water overnight is exactly the kind of site Aedes prefers.
