This page describes how our guides are actually made. If we ever stop doing something listed here, this page changes with it.
Three people write this site, and every guide carries the name of the one who wrote it. Their bios say what they actually grow and where. None of them claims a professional title or a certification, because none of them holds one for this work, and a byline is not the place to imply otherwise.
Where a claim is well supported, we state it. Where gardeners disagree or the evidence is thin, we write that gardeners report it rather than dressing it up as fact. When a timing or a measurement comes from a writer's own garden instead of a source, the guide says so.
Guides are checked before they publish and rewritten when they turn out to be wrong. A guide we can no longer stand behind is retired rather than quietly left up, and we would rather publish fewer guides than pad the site with ones we have not checked.
Every photo on a guide carries its attribution, its licence, and a link to its source, shown next to the image rather than buried in the page. A guide with no image it can properly credit runs without one.
Our Hindi and Spanish guides are written by the same people who write the English ones, not passed through a machine and published unread. Other languages cover the site's navigation and pages; guides in those languages are still being written.
We link from one guide to another only where a reader following the sentence would genuinely want the other page. We do not add links to guides for the sake of search engines.
