The Kitchen-Scrap Liquid Feed I Actually Use on My Balcony Pots
For two years after I started this balcony, I bought a bottled liquid fertiliser every month from the nursery near my building, thirty-odd rupees a bottle, diluted it as directed, and used it on everything. It worked fine. Then a neighbour mentioned she just soaks banana peels in water and uses that instead, and I felt a bit silly for not trying it sooner given how many peels I throw out. I've been making my own version for over a year now and my chillies, curry leaf and jasmine are doing about as well as they were on the bottled feed, for the cost of nothing. This isn't a replacement for real compost or for a balanced fertiliser on a plant that's genuinely hungry, it's a free, steady top-up, and I want to be honest about where it helps and where it doesn't.
What I Actually Put In It
Banana peels are the base, I save every one that comes out of my kitchen. I also add vegetable peelings that aren't oily or spicy (potato and carrot peel, the tough outer leaves of cabbage, cucumber ends), never anything cooked, oily, dairy, or meat, since that just rots and smells instead of fermenting cleanly. I don't add citrus peel in large amounts, it can make the mix quite acidic, and I've had better results keeping it out or using only a little.
The Method
I chop the peels roughly (smaller pieces break down faster) and pack them into a container with a lid, an old 2-litre bottle with the top cut off works, or any bucket you're not using for anything else. I fill it with water to cover the scraps, leave about two inches of air at the top, and put the lid on loosely, not sealed, since gas needs to escape as it ferments. It sits for two to three weeks. I stir or shake it every few days when I remember, which speeds things up and keeps it from getting a bad smell. You'll know it's ready when the liquid has gone a murky brown-yellow and smells more like fermented tea than rot, sharp and slightly sour, not sewage-like. If it smells genuinely bad, something anaerobic has gone wrong, usually too little air exchange, and I'd toss that batch rather than risk it on the plants.
Dilution and How I Use It
I strain out the solids (they go into my regular compost, they're not wasted) and dilute the liquid roughly 1 part liquid to 10 parts water, closer to weak tea in colour than to the strained liquid itself. Undiluted, it's strong enough to stress roots, I learned this the hard way on a young chilli seedling that sulked for a week after I got impatient with the ratio. I water it in at the base, not on the leaves, once every couple of weeks through the growing season, not every watering.
What This Is Actually Good For, and What It Isn't
Banana peels themselves are a genuinely nutrient-bearing material, not folk-remedy filler. Wikipedia's banana peel article, citing a 2012 study in Bioresource Technology, states peels run 6 to 9% protein and 20 to 30% fibre by dry matter, and separately notes peels are an established input for both composting and fertiliser use. What I can't tell you with a real source behind it is the exact NPK ratio of the steeped liquid specifically, since fermenting in water pulls out a fraction of what's in the peel, not all of it, and I haven't found a study measuring the liquid rather than the raw peel. So I treat this as a mild, mixed-nutrient top-up, not a precisely dosed fertiliser, and I still use a proper balanced feed (the bottled kind, or well-made compost) on anything that's flowering, fruiting heavily, or showing real deficiency signs like widespread yellowing (my yellowing leaves guide has the diagnostic questions I ask before assuming it's a feeding problem). This liquid is the everyday, low-stakes half of my feeding routine, not the whole of it.
What This Doesn't Fix
It won't rescue a plant that's actually root-bound or pot-bound, feeding a plant that needs repotting just delays the real fix (my container size guide has the sizing rule I use). It also won't do much for a plant that's struggling from heat stress rather than hunger, those look similar at a glance but need very different responses (my summer heat protection guide covers telling the two apart). And it's not a pest treatment of any kind, a plant covered in fungus gnats or aphids needs that problem solved directly, not a feed. Used for what it actually is, though, a free, low-effort way to put kitchen waste back into the soil instead of the bin, it's one of the cheapest habits on this whole balcony.
