Push three or four toothpicks into a healthy, medium-sized sweet potato root, spacing them evenly around the middle so they can hold it upright. Suspend it in a quart jar with the bottom half of the root submerged in water, then set the jar somewhere warm with indirect light. Change the water weekly; cloudy water is a sign of bacterial growth, not a sign to wait it out.

That first stage, the leafy growth on the root itself, is called a sprout, not a slip yet. Once a sprout reaches 6 inches or longer, twist or pull it free from the mother root and stand it in a fresh jar of its own water to root. Per Clemson, that rooting stage "takes about 10 days." Only once it has grown its own roots does it correctly become a "slip", ready to plant at about 3 inches deep. Total time from a dry root on the counter to a plantable slip: roughly 3 to 4 weeks, not the 2 weeks the sprouting stage alone might suggest.

The Substitution That Ruins It

Here is the line most versions of this trick leave out, and it is the entire reason a jar that worked for someone else might do nothing at all for you. A potato is a true tuber, a swollen underground stem. A sweet potato is a swollen root. The distinction matters here because it's the root's own growing tissue, not a tuber's eyes, that produces the sprouts this method relies on.

What This Is and Isn't Worth

Worth doing: a handful of slips from one root, at essentially zero cost, if you have a home-harvested or organically grown sweet potato on hand and roughly a month of counter space and patience before your planting window.

Not worth doing: expecting a standard grocery-store root to behave the same way. It might sprout anyway (treatment isn't always complete or evenly applied), but per Clemson's own framing it is the less likely outcome, not the default one.
