Gas exchange, including CO2 and O2, happens when the stomata are open, so for this plant that exchange is concentrated at night rather than during the day, which is the true part of the popular claim.
What the Claim Overstates
Here's where it goes further than the biology supports. Every plant releases oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis, and every living plant also respires (consuming oxygen, releasing CO2) around the clock, snake plant included. What's different about CAM plants like this one is timing of stomatal opening, not some unique nighttime-only oxygen-production ability other plants lack entirely. None of the above means this is a mediocre houseplant, it just means the nighttime-oxygen framing isn't the reason to grow one. What's actually documented: it tolerates low light levels and irregular watering, needing as little as one watering every few months in winter, and it was one of the twelve plants tested in the original 1989 NASA Clean Air Study (there, as Sansevieria trifasciata laurentii), where it showed some capacity to filter certain airborne toxins under sealed laboratory conditions.
