That directly contradicts the popular version of the advice, which credits the night-time drop as the trigger. The popular version of this advice is not baseless, it is just attributing the effect to the wrong half of the day. In most homes and in outdoor conditions during early fall (the season most orchid owners try this), a period with cooler nights also comes with cooler days: night and day temperatures move together as the season shifts. Someone who moves their orchid outside in September and sees a spike a few weeks later is very plausibly seeing the daytime-temperature-ceiling effect the study measured, while attributing it to the nighttime drop that happened to occur alongside it in the same window. The two variables were never separated in casual observation the way Blanchard and Runkle separated them in a controlled setting.
What This Means for Reblooming Your Own Plant
If your phalaenopsis has finished blooming and you want to encourage a new spike, the actionable version of this finding is to focus on keeping DAYTIME temperatures on the cooler side, below roughly 81F, rather than chasing a night-time chill specifically. A spot that swings warm during the day, an unshaded windowsill in a warm room, or a spot near a heating vent, works against reblooming regardless of how cool it gets at night. You do not need to engineer a dramatic nighttime cold snap or move the plant outside on a schedule; a stable, moderately cool daytime spot does the actual work.
