Does Cinnamon Actually Help Houseplants? The Lab Result and the Garden Claim Are Not the Same Study

Cinnamaldehyde is cinnamon's principal active compound, making up roughly 90 percent of cinnamon essential oil. In laboratory testing, purified cinnamaldehyde has demonstrated real antibacterial activity (Vasconcelos et al., 2018, in a review of antibacterial mechanisms published in Microbial Pathogenesis) and real antifungal activity (Shreaz et al., 2016, in Fitoterapia, describing cinnamaldehyde and its derivatives as a class of antifungal agents). Both findings are genuine and cited constantly in the "cinnamon is a natural fungicide" advice that circulates on houseplant forums. That advice is not making up the chemistry. It is misreading what the chemistry was tested on.
The Distance Between a Petri Dish and a Cut Root
Here is what those two studies actually tested, and what they did not. Both worked with purified, extracted cinnamaldehyde at a known, controlled concentration, not ground cinnamon bark powder, which is a crude mixture where cinnamaldehyde is one component diluted among resins, sugars, and other compounds. Both exposed cultured fungal or bacterial strains growing on lab media, agar plates or liquid broth, to that compound directly, not a wounded plant surface sitting in potting mix surrounded by soil microbes, moisture, and organic debris. And both delivered a precisely dosed amount of the compound into the test system, while a kitchen dusting delivers an unmeasured, highly variable quantity of a dilute crude powder, most of which likely never contacts whatever organism is actually driving the rot.
Compound, medium, and concentration all differ between the study and the practice. What neither paper tested, and what nobody has published testing as far as I have found, is the actual bridge: whether dusting ground cinnamon on a living, wounded plant surface in a home growing medium measurably changes rot or damping-off outcomes compared to leaving the wound alone. Shreaz and Vasconcelos are worth citing here specifically because of what they did not test, not just what they found. Treating "cinnamaldehyde kills fungus in a dish" as proof that "cinnamon powder on a cutting works" skips the entire experiment that would actually answer the gardening question.
What To Actually Do If You Reach for the Cinnamon Jar
Here is a verdict, not a shrug. The underlying chemistry is real, so the folk claim did not come from nowhere, and a light dusting of cinnamon on a healthy cutting is very unlikely to hurt the plant. But the specific practice, at the concentration and in the setting a home grower actually uses it, has not been shown to do the antifungal job the internet claims for it. If cinnamon happens to slow something down at kitchen-jar doses on a real wound, nobody has measured it. Treat it as a low-risk habit at best, not a treatment you can rely on.
If you are dealing with an actual damping-off problem, seedlings collapsing at the soil line, or root rot with a genuinely mushy, foul-smelling root system, the documented drivers are overly wet, poorly draining medium and crowded seedlings with poor airflow, not an absence of cinnamon. Fix the water and airflow first. A dusting on top of a wound is a minor add-on at most, never a substitute for correcting what actually causes rot in the first place.

Cinnamon's reputation as a plant fungicide is built on a real finding, cinnamaldehyde's antimicrobial activity, applied to a claim it was never tested against, cinnamon powder on a home garden wound. The compound is documented. The garden practice is not.
