For new amla growers — starting from seed in June:

  1. Seed preparation: Crack the hard outer shell slightly (use the back of a spoon — crack, not crush) — reduces germination time from 6–8 weeks to 3–4 weeks

Amla Status by Stage — Week 3 Reality Check

Established trees (2+ years): By Week 3, the monsoon leaf flush is in full force. New leaf sets should be 3–5 cm long and rapidly darkening from pale yellow-green to deep glossy green. Monsoon Week 4 (July 5 – July 18) is the amla fruit development fortnight — the marble-sized green fruits from June's flowers are now growing rapidly, and your main task is protecting this developing crop while the tree coasts through its easiest monsoon period. By Week 4, amla trees that were properly managed in Weeks 1–3 require only structural support and fruit monitoring. Saplings are entering their fastest root-expansion phase. The monsoon has made amla almost self-sufficient — your interventions now are targeted, not routine.

Amla Status by Stage — Week 4 Reality Check

Established trees (2+ years, fruiting): Fruits that were marble-sized in Week 3 are now approaching grape-to-cherry size by Week 4's end. The skin is firm and pale green, showing the characteristic ridged surface more clearly. The critical Week 4 risk is Phyllosticta fruit spot escalation: dark spots that were small in Week 3 can expand and cause premature fruit drop in Week 4. Week 4 priority: Inspect every fruit cluster at least once mid-week. Remove affected fruits immediately (bag and discard — do not compost). Realistic Week 4 Amla Expectations

Amla is in its element: sustained humidity, warm nights, and monsoon rainfall mirror the ecological conditions in which Phyllanthus emblica evolved. Week 5 is the least crisis-prone checkpoint of the monsoon for amla. That does not mean there is nothing to monitor — fruit antracnose, scale insects, and structural branch stress all peak in Week 5 — but the interventions required are measured, not emergency responses.

Amla Fruit Development — Week 5 Status

May-sown seedlings (now 12–14 weeks): Fast-growing seedlings in nursery bags or containers are now 25–40 cm tall with compound leaves establishing well. Week 5 honest note: The amla garden in Week 5 rewards the grower who avoided the temptation to over-intervene in Weeks 2–4. The October–November harvest is being built, gram by gram, in these July weeks. Your only job this fortnight is to protect what is already forming.

Amla Monsoon Week 6 Checkpoint (Aug 2 – Aug 15)

Monsoon Week 6 (August 2 – August 15) is the fruit development and water management fortnight for amla — when established trees are carrying developing fruits from the June–July flowering set, young trees planted this monsoon have accumulated 6–8 weeks of root establishment, and the primary management tasks are preventing waterlogging while maintaining the aphid and gall-midge monitoring that protects developing fruits. Amla in Week 6 is quietly busy: above-ground the tree appears steady, even unremarkable; below-ground the root system is extending aggressively through the monsoon-loosened soil, and in the fruit clusters the slow chemical transformation that will produce the world's highest vitamin C concentration of any edible fruit is underway.

Week 6 — Fruit Development Status

Amla trees that flowered in March–April and set fruit in May–June are now 6–10 weeks into fruit development.

Week 6 fruit stage (established trees):

Week 12 honest note: The amla tree in November does not ask for much and should not receive much.
