From June's careful establishment — the runners planted in monsoon soil, the drainage engineered, the slug patrols at night — through the August disease management, the September concentration period, and the October harvests that produced the finest material of the year, the mat has been a constant quiet presence in the garden, asking for far less than it delivered. In November, it asks for very little: a sheltered position, reduced water, a mulched root zone, and the patience to let it rest without intervention. The grower who provides these things and then steps back — who resists the urge to water, feed, or force — will find in February that the mat has not been idle. The root mass below the quiet November soil has been consolidating the corm reserves that will drive the March explosion. Week 12 is not an ending. It is the deepest preparation.
