Do Houseplants Actually Clean the Air in Your Home? Rereading the NASA Study

The claim that a few houseplants will clean your indoor air traces back to one 1989 NASA study, and it gets repeated far past what that study actually tested. Here's what NASA measured, why a sealed test chamber is not your living room, and what the follow-up research since then actually found.

The Claim, and Where It Actually Comes From

"NASA says houseplants clean your air" shows up on plant shop signage, care cards, and roundup articles constantly, almost always without a citation. It traces back to one real study: a 1989 project run by NASA with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America, looking for ways to clean the air inside sealed environments such as space stations. Researchers tested twelve common houseplants, including snake plant (the plant pictured here), English ivy, peace lily, and several dracaena varieties, for their ability to remove three specific pollutants, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene, from the air around them. The study found measurable removal of all three under its test conditions. That part of the claim is real. What gets dropped almost every time it is repeated is the setting the result came from.

Sealed Chamber, Not Living Room

The NASA study measured plants inside small, sealed test chambers, the same kind of enclosed environment a space station represents, where there is no fresh outdoor air continuously mixing in. Your home is not sealed. It exchanges air with the outdoors constantly through windows, doors, vents, and simple structural leakage, and that ongoing exchange already removes volatile organic compounds on its own, whether or not a single plant is in the room. A widely cited 2020 review in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology (Cummings and Waring) worked out what it would take for houseplants alone to match that natural air exchange rate, and the number is stark: somewhere between 10 and 1,000 plants per square meter of a room's floor space, packed in at a density no home or office actually has. A few plants on a shelf are nowhere near that scale.

The Follow-Up Research Didn't Hold Up Either

The NASA result also has not held up well as later researchers tried to test it in real, occupied spaces rather than sealed chambers. A 2014 review in Environmental Science and Pollution Research (Dela Cruz et al.), cited directly in the Wikipedia summary of the NASA study, concluded that while a plant's ability to absorb VOCs is well documented in controlled lab conditions, its effect on air quality in a real, complex space like an office "requires further investigation to clarify the full capacity of plants in real-life settings." In plain terms: the lab result is real, but nobody has since shown it holds up in an actual room with an actual ventilation system, actual furniture, and actual air moving through it. I have not personally read either paper past what the NASA study's own Wikipedia summary quotes, so treat both figures as review-literature conclusions, not something I verified line by line in the primary source.

So Are Houseplants Worthless for Air Quality?

Not worthless, just not the fix the "NASA says" headline implies. Plants do measurably photosynthesize, taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, and some VOC uptake by plant tissue and the soil microorganisms around their roots is real at a small, local scale, even if it does not add up to whole-room air purification. If you like having plants because they measurably clean your air, the honest version of that claim is "a small, local, unmeasured-in-your-specific-room effect," not "removes pollution from my home." If indoor air quality is your actual goal, options with a directly measured, room-scale effect, mechanical ventilation, a HEPA air purifier sized to the room, or simply opening a window, do far more per dollar and per square foot than any number of houseplants will.

The Overwatering Risk Is the Real One

If you are keeping houseplants specifically to chase an air quality benefit the science does not support at home scale, it is worth weighing that against a much more concrete risk: overwatering a plant you are trying to keep alive for its supposed air benefits is one of the most common ways houseplants actually die. The Bottom Line

The NASA Clean Air Study is a real 1989 experiment that found real VOC removal, inside a sealed chamber built to mimic a space station. It was never a study of your living room, and the two major follow-up reviews since then, one modeling what plant density it would actually take to matter at room scale, one testing real occupied spaces directly, both concluded the original result does not scale to how anyone actually keeps houseplants. Keep plants for the reasons that are genuinely true: they are enjoyable, they photosynthesize, and a few species tolerate low light and neglect well. Do not keep them, or skip an air purifier, because you read that NASA proved they clean a room's air. That specific claim outran its own evidence decades ago.

FAQ

Which plants were actually in the NASA study?

Twelve species were tested in the original 1989 report: variegated snake plant, English ivy, peace lily, Chinese evergreen, bamboo palm, red-edged dracaena, cornstalk dracaena, weeping fig, Barberton daisy, florist's chrysanthemum, and two Dracaena deremensis cultivars, Janet Craig and Warneckei. These are the plants most "NASA approved air purifying plants" lists are actually referring to, even when the list itself does not say so.

Does this mean the original NASA data was faked or wrong?

No. The original measurements of VOC removal inside the test chambers are not in dispute; the problem is entirely with how the result gets applied outside the conditions it was measured in. A sealed-chamber result is a real result about sealed chambers. Extending it to an ordinary, ventilated room is the part that later research could not confirm.

Should I get rid of my houseplants if they don't clean the air?

No reason to, unless air purification was your only reason for having them. Keep them for what is actually true: they photosynthesize, many are genuinely pleasant to care for, and a properly matched plant for your light and humidity conditions is low maintenance. Just don't let "it's cleaning my air" replace real ventilation or an actual air purifier if indoor air quality is a real concern in your home.
