Terrarium for Beginners: Why Too Much Water Kills It, Not Too Little

Every other beginner plant guide is about remembering to water. A terrarium is the opposite problem: it's a closed (or nearly closed) glass system, and the beginner mistake is doing too much — too much water, too little airflow — until rot and mould take over. This guide covers picking the right build for your effort level and the specific restraint a terrarium needs that no other houseplant does.

The One Thing That's Backwards About Terrariums

Almost everything else in this corpus is about not forgetting to water. A terrarium flips that. Glass containers — especially closed ones with a lid — trap humidity and slow evaporation dramatically, so the plants inside need far less water than the same species would in an open pot, and the air inside barely moves. That combination means the terrarium beginner-killer is rot and mould, not drought. If your terrarium is struggling, the fix is almost never "add more" — it's "open the lid," "water less," or "take a plant out." Knowing when to stop doing things is the actual skill here.

Closed vs. Open: Pick the One That Matches Your Actual Effort Level

Terrariums get sold as one universal "low-maintenance desk plant" idea, and they aren't. Closed and open builds have opposite care profiles, and conflating them is how beginners kill both.

A sealed or near-sealed terrarium is close to a self-contained water cycle once it's balanced — water evaporates from the soil, condenses on the glass, and drips back down. Done right, a mature closed terrarium can go weeks without additional water. The catch is getting that balance right at setup, and resisting the urge to keep watering "just in case" afterward — that's what tips a working closed system into a mouldy one. Good closed-terrarium plants are humidity-loving tropicals that would otherwise need a humidifier as a houseplant: rex begonia, peperomia, and Boston fern (see the full Boston fern growing guide for its humidity needs outside a terrarium). Calathea also fits the humidity profile but is the fussiest of the four to keep genuinely happy long-term — pick it only if you want a project, not your first build.

Open terrariums (no lid, or a wide shallow bowl): NOT automatically the easy option

Open terrariums, usually built around succulents or cacti, are marketed as the beginner-proof choice — no lid to manage, "just like a regular plant." That's only half true, and the missed half is what kills them: most decorative terrarium glass has no drainage hole, and succulents are more sensitive to sitting in wet soil than almost anything else in this corpus. A closed tropical terrarium that gets a little overwatered can often just be opened up to dry out; a drainage-less glass bowl with a waterlogged succulent has nowhere for that water to go, and the roots rot from the bottom before it's visible from the top. If you're building open, water sparingly and infrequently, use a well-draining succulent/cactus mix (see how to propagate succulents for soil and handling basics), and treat the absence of a lid as needing less water, not permission to water like a regular houseplant. Echeveria is a reasonable open-build pick precisely because it tolerates being under-watered far better than over-watered. The Actual Failure Sequence, and How to Stop It

  1. Overwatering at setup. Terrarium soil looks dry faster than it is, because glass hides moisture that's still sitting at the bottom. Water lightly and wait — you can always add more; you can't take it back out easily.   2. No airflow, so mould gets a head start. A sealed lid plus wet soil plus decaying plant matter (a dropped leaf, dead moss) is exactly the environment mould needs.   3. Fungus gnats move in. Constantly moist, undisturbed terrarium soil is prime breeding ground.   4. Root rot, the point of no return. By the time roots have rotted in standing water — closed or open build — recovery odds drop fast. FAQ

Do terrariums need drainage holes?

Most decorative terrarium glass doesn't have one, which is exactly why watering restraint matters more than it would in a regular pot. If you can find or drill a container with drainage, use it — it removes the single biggest risk in this guide. Without one, a gravel or charcoal layer under the soil helps but does not replace real drainage; it only buys you a small margin.

Is a closed terrarium actually low-maintenance?

Yes, once it's balanced — that's the whole appeal, and it's genuinely true for a mature closed tropical build. The fussy part is the first few weeks of getting the water level and lid-venting right, and resisting topping up water out of habit once it's working. Judge it by the glass, not the calendar: condensation lightly fogging and clearing daily is healthy; permanently soaked glass or standing water at the bottom means back off.

Why is my "easy" succulent terrarium dying faster than a regular houseplant?

Almost always drainage and watering frequency, not the plant itself. A succulent in a drainage-less glass bowl watered on the same schedule as a normal potted succulent will rot, because the excess water has nowhere to go. Water less than you think you should, and check that the soil surface is genuinely dry before adding any.

Can I mix a succulent and a fern in the same terrarium?

Not successfully long-term — they want opposite humidity and watering, and one will kill the other. Pick a closed/tropical build (fern, peperomia, begonia) or an open/succulent build, not both in one container.
