Hard Water Mineral Crust on Pots: What It Is and What Actually Helps
Every terracotta pot on my balcony develops the same thing within six to eight weeks: a rough white-to-grey crust, thickest right at the rim and on the outer wall just below it, where water evaporates after I've watered. My first year here I genuinely thought it was some kind of mould and scrubbed it off with a wire brush — which is not what you want to do to unglazed terracotta, and I regretted it once I understood what was actually going on.
I water almost everything by hand, straight from the tap, with a steel mug — no filter, no rainwater harvesting setup, just Pune municipal water, which runs hard. If your water leaves a white ring in your electric kettle or a chalky film on your bathroom tiles, you have the same water I do, and you'll see the same crust on your pots.
What The Crust Actually Is
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium (and often bicarbonates) picked up from the ground or the pipes it travels through. Water itself evaporates; the dissolved minerals don't — they're left behind as a solid residue wherever the water last sat before drying. On a pot, that's the rim, the outer wall near the soil line, and the saucer underneath, because those are the places water evaporates from repeatedly.
This is the identical process to the limescale you get in a kettle or the white spots on a glass after air-drying — same minerals, same evaporation mechanism, different surface. On unglazed terracotta the crust is more visible than on plastic or glazed ceramic because terracotta is porous: it wicks water (and the minerals in it) through the clay itself, not just across the surface, so the crust can form on both the outside wall and the rim, not only where water splashes.
Does It Actually Harm The Plant?
Mostly no, with one real exception I watch for.
The crust itself, sitting on the outside of the pot or on the rim, isn't touching the roots and isn't a threat by itself. What I do watch for is the same minerals accumulating inside the potting mix over months of hard-water-only watering — that's a slower process, and it's the one that can matter, especially for plants that are genuinely sensitive to alkaline, mineral-heavy soil (I've seen it show up first as tip-browning on my ferns, which prefer more acidic, mineral-light conditions than most of what I grow).
For the bulk of what's on my balcony — money plant, ZZ, curry leaf, most succulents, most of my herbs — I haven't seen the mineral buildup itself cause visible damage even after years of hard water only. The crust on the pot has been a cosmetic and pot-longevity issue for me far more than a plant-health one.
What Actually Reduces It (No Filter Required)
I tried three things, in order of how much difference each made:
1. Water from the base, not overhead, where I can
For pots on saucers, I started pouring the mug into the saucer itself for plants that tolerate it, letting the pot wick water up rather than pouring over the rim every time. Less water evaporating directly off the rim edge means visibly less crust forming right there. This doesn't work for everything — my curry leaf and most edibles still get watered from the top because they need it evenly through the mix — but for succulents and money plant on saucers, it's made a real difference.
2. Wipe the rim dry after watering, when I remember
Genuinely low-effort, and it works because the crust forms as water sits and evaporates on the surface. A quick wipe with an old cloth right after watering — not scrubbing, just removing the standing film before it dries — stops a meaningful amount of the rim crust before it ever sets. I don't do this for all 40 pots every day; I do it for the handful I actually see people (the ones near the door), which is honest about my actual effort level and still visibly helps those specific pots.
3. Let tap water sit for a day before using it, for my most sensitive pots
For the two or three plants where I've actually seen mineral-related leaf issues (the ferns), I now fill a bucket the evening before and let it stand overnight, uncovered, before watering the next day. This doesn't remove dissolved minerals — standing water doesn't soften hard water — but it does let chlorine (if your water is chlorinated) off-gas, which is a separate but related "leave water out overnight" habit people often conflate with hard-water fixes. I'm not overclaiming softening here: this step is for chlorine-sensitive plants, not for the mineral crust itself, and I don't want to muddy the two.
What I Deliberately Didn't Do
I didn't buy a water softener or an RO filter for the plants — for 40 pots on a rented balcony, that's real money (a basic RO unit runs several thousand rupees) for a problem that's mostly cosmetic. I also stopped scrubbing crust off with a wire brush after I realised I was scratching the terracotta itself, which just gives the next round of mineral deposit more surface texture to grip onto. A soft brush with plain water, occasionally, is enough if I want a pot looking cleaner for a photo.
What I'd Tell Someone Just Noticing This
If you're seeing a white-grey crust on terracotta pots and you water from the tap in a hard-water city, it's almost certainly mineral deposit, not fungus or disease — check whether your kettle or bathroom tiles have the same chalky white residue as a quick confirmation. It's mostly a pot-appearance issue, not a plant-health emergency, unless you're growing something genuinely mineral-sensitive (ferns, azaleas, and similar acid-lovers are the ones I'd watch). You don't need a filter to manage it: watering from the saucer where the plant tolerates it, and an occasional wipe of the rim, has been enough for my balcony.

Is the white crust on my pots dangerous to my plants?
Mostly no. The crust itself sits on the outside of the pot, away from the roots. The thing to actually watch for is mineral buildup accumulating inside the potting mix over months, which can affect mineral-sensitive plants like ferns — that's a slower, separate process from the visible rim crust.
Will a water filter or softener fix this?

Does letting tap water sit overnight remove the minerals?

Is it safe to scrub the crust off terracotta?
