The problem is almost never the plant. It's the timing, the seed prep, and the mistake of treating dhania like a year-round herb when it is, in Indian conditions, a strict seasonal crop.

The #1 Mistake: Sowing at the Wrong Time

Most Indian gardeners reach for dhania seeds in April or May when they finally have time to garden. This is the worst possible time. Coriander bolts — produces a flower stalk and stops making leaves — when temperatures stay above 30°C consistently. From March to June across most of India, daytime temperatures are exactly the range that triggers rapid bolting.

The solution is simple: match your sowing to the cool windows.

The two windows: October–February and July–September. Outside these, growing dhania in India is an uphill battle.

The Seed-Crushing Trick (Critical for Germination)

Coriander "seeds" from your kitchen spice box are not single seeds — they are two seeds fused inside one round husk. Sowing them whole forces each seed to fight through the husk. Germination can take 2–3 weeks and may be patchy.

Step 1: Split the husk

Why Coriander Bolts (And How to Stop It)

Bolting is when the plant skips straight to flowering — you see a tall flower stalk shoot up, the leaves become small and ferny, and leaf production stops. Once a plant bolts, you cannot reverse it.

What triggers bolting:

  • Consistent temperatures above 30°C
  • Days longer than 12 hours (India March–September)
  • Root disturbance (transplanting)
  • Drought stress (dry soil forcing the plant into survival mode)
  • Pot-bound roots

How to prevent it:

  1. Sow in Oct–Feb or Jul–Sep — outside these windows, bolting is almost unavoidable
  2. Direct sow only — no transplanting, ever
  3. Shade from 10 AM onwards in spring (March–April): move your pot or use a shade cloth

When it bolts anyway: Let it. Harvest the seeds. Coriander seeds (the whole spice) are excellent for the next sowing round, and the flowers attract beneficial insects.

Succession Sowing: The Key to Continuous Supply

Most Indian gardeners sow once, get a 2-week feast, then nothing. The solution is succession sowing — staggering multiple pots so you're always harvesting from one while others grow.

How to do it:

  • Sow a new pot of dhania every 10–14 days through the season
  • Keep 3 pots in rotation at different growth stages
  • When Pot 1 is ready to harvest, Pot 2 is at mid-growth, Pot 3 was just sown

What to watch for in monsoon:

  • Waterlogging is the main risk. Dhania roots rot fast in standing water. Elevate pots on bricks or pot stands so drainage holes are not blocked by water on the balcony floor
  • Damping off: Monsoon fungal pressure can kill seedlings at the base. Preventive fix: water with neem oil solution (5ml cold-pressed neem oil + 1ml liquid soap in 1L water) once a week at soil level
  • Soil mix: Use extra drainage in monsoon — add more sand (15%) and less cocopeat

Everyone says "sow in monsoon" — and they're right that the cool temperatures are ideal. But nobody warns you that high humidity triggers damping-off at alarming rates, seeds rot instead of sprouting, and established plants wilt in waterlogged soil even though they love cool weather. Here's how to succeed where most people fail.

Why Monsoon Sowing Fails (And How to Fix It)

Monsoon soil stays too wet for germination if you use standard potting mix. The fix: use a sowing mix that's 50% coarse sand or perlite + 50% potting mix. Raise containers so water drains freely. Sow under shelter where rain doesn't directly hit the pot. This single change doubles your monsoon germination success rate.

Damping-Off: The Silent Killer

Seedlings emerge, look healthy for 3–5 days, then suddenly collapse at soil level as if cut. That's damping-off — a soilborne fungal disease (Fusarium or Pythium) triggered by high humidity and wet soil. It's the #1 reason Indian home gardeners fail at monsoon dhania.

Kerala Monsoon Day 12 — Dhania Seedling Thinning + Damping-Off Prevention

Kerala monsoon is now 12 days active (June 1, 2026). Dhania sown at monsoon onset (May 20–June 1) should now have seedlings standing 5–7 cm tall with 2–3 true leaves visible. This is the most critical intervention window in the entire dhania growing cycle: thinning.

Most Indian home gardeners skip thinning. It feels counterintuitive — you're removing plants you just grew. But crowded dhania seedlings create a microclimate of stagnant, humid air at soil level that is the exact condition needed for damping-off (Fusarium, Pythium) to strike. 4-Step Thinning Protocol for Monsoon Dhania (Day 12):

  1. Identify the weakest — In each cluster of 2–3 seedlings, pinch off (do not pull) the smallest, most crowded seedling at soil level. Pulling disturbs the roots of neighbours.

What is the difference between dhania seeds and dhania leaves?

Both come from the same plant (Coriandrum sativum). Fresh green leaves are what most Indian recipes call for as a garnish. When the plant matures and seeds ripen, those dried seeds are the whole spice used in curry powder, tempering, and pickles. The seeds you buy from a spice box can be grown to get fresh leaves — they are the same plant.

Dhania / Coriander Monsoon Week 2 Checkpoint (Jun 8–20)

Monsoon Week 2 (June 8–20) is the single best sowing window for coriander across all of India — and simultaneously the window where existing pots are most at risk. Dhania is uniquely reactive to monsoon conditions: germination is faster, growth is faster, and fungal failure is faster. Here is the Week 2 state-of-garden checkpoint.

Where Your Coriander Should Be Right Now (by sowing date)

Pre-monsoon / late May sowings (sown May 20–31, 8–18 days old): These seedlings are in the most dangerous damping-off window. If sowed densely (as most people do with dhania), the seedlings are now touching or overlapping. Thin immediately to 4–5 cm spacing. Do not pull — pinch at soil level. Thinning is the single most important Week 2 action for pre-monsoon sowings.
